As mentioned in today’s Inside Higher Ed article, “New Baseline for Accessibility“, the refresh of Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Rehabilitation Act will provide a new baseline for electronic and “information technology, including computer hardware, software and documentation” procured by federal agencies, is accessible to persons with disabilities. The 508 refresh rule will take effect January 18, 2018. Even if Section 508 does not directly apply to colleges and universities, the Washington state #188 mandate, which is being addressed at UW, does and it along with 508 can help us put pressure on vendors to provide accessible products (that they can in turn sell to federal agencies). Section 508 also gives on the accessible design of other IT besides websites (which is the focus of WCAG 2.0).
